Sound Design Work
Twelfth Night
By: William Shakespeare
Directed By: Nic McMinn
Performed at Illinois State University
The sounds you hear below are taken from the preshow sequence in our performance of Twelfth Night. The director made some edits to the script and moved the scene where the storm takes place to the beginning. Our storm started five minutes before the start of the performance and was designed to be an immersive experience for the audience. Right before the show started the actor playing the character Feste would come before the audience and make the show announcements before beginning the show. It was at this point that the storm would become the most powerful. The first track is the entire five-minute-long storm sequence. The second track has been cut down to only include the last portion of the storm. All tracks were mixed in the theatre where the performance took place and was presented in surround sound. The following has been remixed into stereo.
Eurydice
By: Sarah Ruhl
Directed By: Myeongsik Jason Jang
Performed at Illinois State University
The following three tracks were taken from various places from our performance of Eurydice. The first track is the sound of the elevator as it arrives in the underworld. It was designed to sound unnatural, yet calming. This is the first sound that people who have died hear as they step into the underworld. The second track takes place as Orpheus and Eurydice are separated for the second time. Because of how integral music is to the plot, the sound of a breaking guitar string was used to achieve this effect. The last track is a drone that played as the Interesting Man led Eurydice to his apartment in the living world. I wanted it to sound like the opposite of the elevator ping. Disconcerting but not immediately threatening.
